Florida is facing huge challenges. As wise statesmen over the ages have observed, times of crisis can be an opportunity for positive changes. The League of Women Voters, one of the nation's most respected non-partisan organizations, is beginnng its 91st year of encouraging citizens to speak out for positive reform.
Some of the most important issues include: Expanding access to health care at reduced costs, helping our school compete in the national arena, adding new sources of revenue and jobs to our state, cleaning up our waterways and protecting our coasts and precious beaches and quality of life.
We're urging Florida Legislators to:
IMPROVE, NOT REPEAL, HEALTHCARE: To help expand access to health care at a reduced cost: Allow nurse practitioners in Florida to be allowed to prescribe medicine as they do in all other states except Florida and….Alabama. Nationally, the independent Office of Budget estimates almost a one trillion dollar savings over 25 years with the National Health Care Reform Act. We urge our elected leaders to get to work helping get cost effective coverage for the almost 20% of our population that has no health insurance.
ADD JOBS: Pass an Energy Policy that provides incentives for renewable energy companies and provides incentives for homeowners and businesses to conserve, continue to build on our public transportation, connecting our multimodal transportation systems with rail, buses, bike and walking trails.
CLOSE THE BUDGET GAP THROUGH FAIR TAXATION: Close the gaping loopholes that allow almost 2 billion dollars to non-essential special interests. And follow the lead of all other states without income taxes and close the combined interest tax which allow large multinational companies to avoid paying income tax in Florida.
HONOR THE VOICE OF FLORIDA VOTERS: A remarkable 62% of our electorate voted YES on the Fair Districts amendments and requiring legislators to follow rules when drawing political districts. We urge the Legislature to ensure public participation and transparency in the process.
We need every citizen to pay attention. Visit the League website to find your state legislators. Talk to them....let them know you are paying attention. Hold them accountable. Be an active and informed voter.
